Exploring how to build strong AI for Kinyarwanda without needing the huge datasets major world languages have.

Building strong AI for a language like English can lean on enormous public datasets. Kinyarwanda does not have that luxury yet. Rather than waiting for that data to exist, this research area looks at how to get more out of what is actually available.

What we're exploring

  • Transfer learning — adapting models trained on larger multilingual data to Kinyarwanda specifically

  • Cross-lingual techniques that let related languages inform each other

  • Deliberate, careful data collection rather than collecting at scale for its own sake
